WALK WITH ME:
The Excitement of Osaka!
March - April 2025
by Lala Lopez de Leon
In the summer of 2024, I traveled to Toronto, Canada, to celebrate the wedding of my nephew, Gabriel, and his long-time sweetheart, Catherine. During the festivities, the newlyweds mentioned Japan as one of their dream destinations, eager to visit when they could take a well-deserved break from work.
I didn’t have to wait too long—they're here now! This is Gabriel’s second time in Japan and Catherine’s first, yet both share the same adventurous spirit. One thing is certain: this trip isn’t just about sightseeing—it’s a much-anticipated food adventure!
Their journey began in Tokyo, where they were greeted by beautiful early spring weather—a refreshing contrast to the snowy landscapes of Toronto. Exploring Asakusa and Ginza, we savored the vibrant atmosphere, a perfect prelude to their immersive Japanese experience. But their excitement didn’t end there. The next stop? The dynamic metropolis of Osaka!
Our adventure officially began at Tokyo Station. With some time to spare, we explored the sophisticated Marunouchi area, where Gabriel and Catherine’s fascination with skyscrapers became apparent. This part of the city perfectly blends urban development with heritage preservation, offering a glimpse into Tokyo’s architectural evolution—a theme that would continue throughout our journey.
Aboard the Nozomi Shinkansen, the two-and-a-half-hour journey to Osaka felt like a transition into an entirely different world. The language, culture, sights, sounds, and even the scents of the city had their own distinct character.
Osaka’s unique Kansai culture is one of its biggest draws. The street food scene is legendary—many global food trends can trace their origins back to this vibrant city. It’s no exaggeration to say that Osaka’s dynamic culinary culture has played a significant role in Japan’s tourism boom.
But beyond its modern charm, Osaka remains deeply rooted in tradition. A visit to the city wouldn’t be complete without seeing its iconic landmark, Osaka Castle. Built in 1583 by the shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle stands as a symbol of Japan’s unification era—a breathtaking reminder of the country’s rich history.
While I was captivated by the historical and culinary treasures of Osaka, Gabriel and Catherine had their eyes set on something else—something I hadn’t even noticed before. Thanks to social media, Osaka’s Lovelock Wall had become a must-visit attraction for couples. Inspired by similar romantic traditions in Paris and Florence, the Umeda Sky Building transformed its top floor into a dreamy locale where lovers seal their commitment with heart-shaped padlocks.
At first, I thought my nephew and his wife were simply intrigued by Osaka’s towering skyscrapers. But as we reached the Umeda Sky Building, it became clear—the Lovelock Wall had drawn them in. Of course, they’re on their honeymoon!
Their joy was infectious, and seeing them embrace this romantic tradition made our Osaka adventure all the more special. As we continued exploring, I couldn’t help but smile—this trip was shaping up to be an unforgettable journey of love, discovery, and, of course, incredible food!
WALK WITH ME:
Evia
January - February 2025

January 19, 2025
Home in Biñan for a very important family affair that I can’t miss. I am to be a godmother or sponsor to my niece on her wedding day on the 22nd of January.
With a few days to spare, we planned a mini-reunion lunch with cousins and a get-together with the soon-to-be-wed couple before their big day.
Taking the initiative, I searched for a venue that would be convenient for everyone, as family members are now scattered across the metropolis, far from their hometown of Biñan. For our grand lunch, I was drawn to the eclectic charm of Tigerleaf, an Asian fusion restaurant at Evia Lifestyle Center.
Located in Daang Hari, Las Piñas, Evia is a relatively new premier shopping and entertainment destination.
The mall itself sets the tone for what to expect at a place like Tigerleaf. Upon entering, we were greeted by the breathtaking Atrium, a vast expanse reaching up to five or six floors high! It’s a sight to behold. Moving on, we strolled through the Promenade, aptly named for its relaxed, park-like ambiance—perfect for a leisurely walk. If you’re simply there to "pasyal," this space is satisfying on its own.
When hunger struck, we made our way to the Piazza. From there, it’s a quick ride up the escalator to the second level, where Tigerleaf awaits at the far end. Its vibrant colors and intricate designs draw you in instantly. The decor is an enchanting mix of old-world furniture, chandeliers, and colorful fabrics—a nod to the countries that inspire its cuisine: Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and even hints of Spain and Mexico.
Tigerleaf did not disappoint. The cuisine was superb, and everyone agreed that their Lumpiang Ubod was a standout, exceeding all expectations. The staff’s warmth and charm added to the experience, making us feel right at home and eager to return.
Evia itself impressed as an all-in-one destination. Rain or shine, the fun doesn’t stop. It’s an indoor park, a shopping haven, and a food lover’s paradise rolled into one. Truly, there’s something for everyone.
This gathering was a memorable prelude to the wedding festivities, and I’m grateful for moments like these that bring family together.
